In this SPECIAL EDITION, Jersey Joe taste tests Burger King’s new Halloween Whopper sandwich.  The first ever fast food sandwich with an all black bun in the US.

Specialty hamburgers with black buns have been featured as promotional items at fast food restaurants overseas for years.  The first, a Star Wars Darth Vador burger was sold by Quick restaurants in France in 2012.  Burger King immediately followed the same year in Japan, with a Premium Kuro Burger (which means Black Burger in English.)

However, the Burger King Halloween Whopper marks the first time a black burger has appeared in the United States.  Taco Bell did sell a blackjack, black colored taco shell, back in 2009.

JERSEY JOE RECOMMENDS:

It’s a fun, novelty item for Halloween.  Give it a try.  I also like the addition of the A-1 sauce, instead of ketchup on a traditional Whopper.  A word or warning… the internet rumors are true.  Not to be gross, but it does turn an interesting color coming out the other end!  You’ll see!

JERSEY JOE RECOMMENDS:

It’s another one of those drinks that was popular in the past and is making a comeback.  Craft cocktails are now all the rage, so more drinks like this will be added to bar menus.  It’s interesting how this became a fad in New York City, then went west, only to be mostly forgotten in the East.

I still think it would be better frozen, though…

And remember… drink responsibility!  Sorry kids, 21 and over – please!

Jersey Joe checks out the fun side of New York City’s playground, Coney Island in this fun video quiz!

Coney Island was settled by Dutch settlers in the 17th century.  It became a popular beach and amusement park area starting in the 19th century.  Once air and auto travel became more affordable, Coney Island lost it’s luster as city dwellers were able to visit other, more far off locals.  After falling into disrepair during the 1980’s, Coney Island has made a major comeback with the opening of Luna Park, more rides, restaurants, beach bars. and independent attractions.

JERSEY JOE RECOMMENDS:

One of my favorite places for fun in New York City.  Despite having a bad reputation and becoming downright dangerous years ago, Coney Island has been cleaned up and is once again, an exciting place for both friends and families.

Make sure you check it out, whether you’re a local or a tourist on vacation.  After all, it’s the birthplace of the hot dog!

Jersey Joe explores an abandoned casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, that’s been walled off for years.

THE 411

What: The Claridge Hotel

Location: Atlantic City, New Jersey

Opened: 1929

Website: www.claridge.com

JERSEY JOE RECOMMENDS:

Since The Claridge Hotel became their own separate hotel, after being sold by Bally’s, the building is in the middle of an amazing transformation.  Aside from the renovations to the former casino space, they are renovating several floors of rooms, and continue to add more amenities and many restaurants and bars are planned.  I remember playing here during the casino days and always thought the building had a very grand feeling to it.  It’s nice to see that the property is in good hands and I look forward to seeing what else they have in store.  I really do with them the best of luck.  With all of the hotel towers that have closed in AC — the town REALLY NEEDS the Claridge.

It’s hidden smack in the middle of an upscale New York City hotel.  Walled off behind red curtains, you would never even know it’s there… except for the occasional celebrity sighting!  The Burger Joint has become one of the Big Apple’s best kept secrets and Jersey Joe had to give it a try!

Name: The Burger Joint

What: hidden burger bar / restaurant

JERSEY JOE RECOMMENDS:

It’s definitely a neat place to visit and it’s cool to be in on a big New York City secret.  I just with that the burger I had ordered would not have been such a soggy mess.  Next time, I’ll go with a single cheeseburger and hold off on the works.

If you’re ever in the city, definitely check it out… just be advised – there’s never enough seats!

What: The Meat Mountain

Where: Arby’s restaurants coast to coast

Time: Limited time offering

Cost: $10 plus tax per sandwich

JERSEY JOE RECOMMENDS:

This is a great idea on Arby’s part.  It all started off, when they posted a picture showing all of the meats they currently have for sale on a bun.  Customers started to ask for the sandwich and someone at the corporate office was listening.  Now, it’s become a win-win!

Arby’s gets all the free social media and web advertising and customers get to try a truly unique sandwich.  This will only on sale for a limited time, but this one will definitely be talked about for years to come.  Skip the diet – and give this at least a try!
